Okay, I’m not going to lie… the past week has been really weird! No homework? No rotations? No lack of sleep? This is not normal for me. I mean, I’m definitely adjusting well to my new routine but I can’t get over how good it feels to have all of this free time!
I’ve been putting off a lot of things I really love for a while now because of academics. Here are some things I’m really looking forward to now that I have more free time:
Sleep: Lots and lots of sleep.
Doing fun things with K: I have pretty much been in school ever since I’ve known K. We met in undergrad, I went to grad school during our engagement and first year of marriage and I started taking DPD (dietetic) classes less than a year after I got my master’s. I actually spent the night before our wedding writing a paper for school. Yet that was nothing compared to my dietetic internship. I sometimes felt like I spent every waking moment devoted to interning, doing work for my rotations, doing school work or studying. I also missed out on 2 family vacations this summer and this was the first year that K and I did not do something cool for our anniversary. I’m definitely looking forward to what this next chapter will bring ;)
Hobbies: A few years ago, I got very interested in photography. I kind of let that go once I started taking a lot of classes because I just didn’t have time to spend playing with my camera. Sometimes I see my camera sitting on my shelf and it makes me sad. I definitely want to pick that back up. K also got me a guitar for my birthday last year and I took lessons last spring, so I hope to get back into that as well!
Spending more time with friends and family: I feel like I’ve been the crappiest friend and family member ever these past 6 months. Hopefully this will change soon :)
Getting back in the gym: I know my husband is going to laugh when he reads this. I joined a gym in February after a lot of debate as to whether I would use the membership. Well, I’m writing this for all of the world to see…. Kyle, you were right. I have only gone a handful of times! You win. But I am going to start working out again, I promise!
Reading more: If you know me then you know I love to read. I have sooo many books on my wishlist, including the Outlander series, Divergent series, And the Mountains Echoed, A Prayer for Owen Meany, The Fault in Our Stars, and Pillars of the Earth. I probably will not get too much into reading until after I take my RD exam (hey, there’s only so much reading a girl can handle) but I’m still looking forward to it.
Speaking of my RD exam, people keep asking me when I’m going to take my test… I’m not quite sure yet! Part of me wants to get it over with ASAP and part of me wants to enjoy the holidays. My internship director recommended spending 30-40 hours of daily, consecutive study time prior to taking the exam. I would probably only be able to study 2 hours per night, so that would mean ~3 weeks of studying every night. I mentioned this before but I have already purchased RD in a Flash and the Inman Review. I’ve been casually using these as study tools but I haven’t started seriously studying yet. One thing I do know is that I’m not telling *anyone* when I do register for the exam because I don’t want to put pressure on myself.
I’m looking forward to chronicling my post-internship life adventures here in the blog.
Hey Sam!
I can totally relate to this post! I am 8 weeks away from finishing my internship (which I’ve been doing at 30 hours per week and working full-time for a grand total of 65-70 hours per week). I keep joking with my husband and friends that I am not going to know what to do with all my free time! My husband and I also have a similar story… I’ve been in school since we met with two undergrad degrees and a masters.
This post helps me see the light at the end of the tunnel! I can’t wait!
I love your blog!
Congrats on almost finishing!!!
