Hey there! Hope you’re having a good day
It has been 5 months since my tonsillectomy so I thought I would give a ‘final update’ on how my recovery went.
It took me about 3 weeks to feel functional after my surgery and maybe about 5 weeks to feel completely normal (normal meaning that I could eat and drink whatever I wanted without feeling uncomfortable). This was about double the time I had expected, but apparently fairly normal based off of what other fellow adult tonsillectomy-ers have told me.
The main thing I wanted to give an update about is how happy I am that I got my tonsils removed! I know it sounds silly since it was such a small procedure but it has really changed my life!!
This is probably gross and TMI, but oh well…
The main reason I got my tonsils removed was because I had tonsil stones. They were such a nuisance. I could feel them all the time, especially when I swallowed. Dislodging them was painful, but leaving them alone was just as uncomfortable. I was paranoid about having bad breath and chewed gum all the time.
I don’t have to deal with any of that anymore!!!!!!!!!!
But more importantly, I used to catch colds fairly often and I felt like I had the weakest immune system on the planet. At least once every month or so I felt like I was coming down with something. I never associated this with my tonsils but guess how many times it has happened since I had them removed? Zero.
Lastly, I used to constantly feel like I had a thick coating of gunk in the back of my throat. This was especially noticeable when I was working out. I always thought this was just from allergies but I haven’t had to deal with this since my tonsillectomy either. Physical activity is so much more enjoyable now!
I almost didn’t go through with having this procedure because of what my doctor told me about the not-so-easy recovery for adults, but I am so glad that I did. The first 2 weeks were definitely not fun but it was completely worth it for how I feel now. My ENT told me that he has almost a 100% satisfaction rate with adults after tonsillectomies… you can count me in that group!
And in case you’re wondering, I have not touched jello since then
