Good morning and Happy Monday to you!
I hope you had a great weekend. Ours was busy, but fun!
We decided to check out the Yiasou Greek Festival on Saturday, which was at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Charlotte. We have wanted to go for the past several years but it seems like something has always come up or we’ve been out of town.
We lived in Roanoke, VA for a few years after we graduated college and we loved going to the Greek and Lebanese festivals there. So we were very much looking forward to going to something similar in Charlotte!
The festival started at 11am on Saturday and we got down to East Blvd around 10:30. I had read on Yelp to get there early because it can get crowded later in the day. I was wondering if we were going to be *too* early, but there was already a line and we had to park several blocks from the church.
We killed some time by walking up East Blvd to a nearby bakery until they started letting people in. We ended up getting biscottis, which we saved for later (and were awesome, by the way).
The festival started right at 11 and the fun began right away! There were lots of activities for kids, like a bounce castle and swings, and we enjoyed a live dance performance.
And then there was the food.
They had several different meal options, and K and I both went with the lamb plate. Chicken is usually my default meat, but I’ve been trying to step outside of the box and try things I normally wouldn’t get. The meal was $14 and included the lamb entrée, a spanakopita, a dolmada, a side salad, bread and tea.
I also got baklava, which was sooooo good.
But the star of the show was K’s dessert: a baklava sundae.
Amazing.
I’m glad that we had the experience of going to the Yiasou Greek Festival since it’s a pretty popular event in Charlotte, but I was a little disappointed in the food. K’s dolmada was raw on the inside, I was not a fan of my spanakopita (and I normally love them) and I was kind of surprised to see they were serving Ken’s Greek dressing. I’m sure it takes a lot to feed the thousands of people who come down there to eat, but I would have thought they would have had the option to buy something homemade. I think if we were to go again next year, we would probably just get an gyro from one of the outside food booths and walk around for a bit.
Other than that, the atmosphere was fun and we enjoyed and checking everything out. I especially enjoyed all of the cool clothing!
Later that day, something very important happened.
Virginia Tech beat Ohio State! Yeahhhh Hokies I’m not a huge football fan in general but I always cheer for VT and the Panthers. I’m happy both teams won this weekend!
Yesterday, we ran a few errands and stopped by the 7th Street Public Market for lunch. I had been there once a few weeks ago and I knew K would really like it. Not all of the vendors are open on Sundays, so we ended up getting sandwiches from Local Loaf.
I got the ham & cheese sandwich, which had ham, brie, pickled cucumbers and mango chutney. I think this might have been the best sandwich I’ve ever had in my entire life. No, really. They also seemed to have a pretty awesome breakfast menu. I have a feeling we will be back there sometime in the near future.
As for the plans for today… I’m not working because my work schedule in September switched to Mondays off. It’s kind of weird to be restricted from exercise right now (due to my knee issue) because my day off is usually when I could get in a really great workout.
I do have a pretty packed day, though: apartment shopping, hair appointment, grocery shopping and vet appointment. Lily is getting her renal function tested and another ultrasound of her bladder. Hopefully they won’t find anything serious.
Hope you guys have a good day!
