Guys, I have been having the worst computer issues this week! This post was originally supposed to be published on Tuesday morning but my computer would not connect to the internet and then wouldn’t work at all. Thankfully we are back in the game and I can give you a recap of last week’s triathlon training.
The funny thing is that I have been dreading publishing this post anyway. Week 7 was my “rest week”, purposely planned for that week because I knew I was going to be on vacation at the beach. While my normal tri schedule involves workouts 6 days per week and 2 brick workouts, here was last week’s plan:
Monday: rest
Tuesday: 600-800m swim
Wednesday: 30-40 min cycle
Thursday: rest
Friday: 20-30 min run
Saturday: rest
Sunday: 30-40 min cycle
Easy breezy, right?
Here is how I would Sum Up Last Week on Vacation:
It was the best of times. It was the worst of times.
Best of times = pool time, margaritas, days on the beach, lovely tan and good company
Worst of times = every workout I attempted to do. Key word: attempt.
Workouts
Tuesday: I got my cast off this day and was really excited to try out swimming afterwards. I got too caught up running errands and I didn’t have enough time. My hand felt funny so maybe it was for the best.
Wednesday: Overindulged on the first beach day and therefore cycling was not a good idea.
Thursday: I went to a gym and did a 40-minute cycle. The kicker? I forgot my headphones. I was in an unfamiliar gym, facing a wall, on a bike that I kind of hated. Talk about boredom.
Friday: I got up at 6:30 am to do a run and honestly, I was pumped. But it turns out that hot/humid weather, a sunburn right where my sports bra was, and having no running sunglasses was a recipe for disaster. It was all I could do to keep running for 15 minutes. It was the first run in my entire training plan that I honestly felt like I physically could not finish.
At least the beach was pretty.
I didn’t do any more workouts for the rest of the week. I had hoped to squeeze in a Sunday evening session but B asked me if I wanted to stop by Taziki’s on the way home from the beach. And when your man offers to eat Mediterranean with you, you don’t turn it down.
Moving Forward
I really hope I don’t regret last week. I was tired and on vacation, so it was hard for me to make triathlon training a priority.
I’m definitely back into things full swing. Now that I’m past the halfway point with training and am still alive, I’m going to shift my focus from just getting things done to actually improving in each area. Here are some of my goals:
- Get back into the pool: complete all swims as planned.
- Try out an open water swim: these are on my training plan every Thursday but are SO scary!
- Start tracking my pace for runs.
- Start tracking my distance for my rides.
Wrist Update
I’ve had my cast off for a week and I’m happy to report that things are feeling pretty good. The first few days were rough but I think that was the muscles in my hands being sore from being used again. I would say my hand feels 80% normal now. Excited to be on the mend!
To Ride or Not to Ride?
You might be wondering now that I have my cast off if I will be riding my bike outside again. The answer is no for a couple of reasons. The fall is still fresh in my mind and it’s scary to get back out there. I’m sure I’ll get to a point where I’m ready to enjoy riding again but I’m not there yet. But more importantly, I’m not supposed to do anything that could put myself in jeopardy of reinjuring my wrist until it’s feeling a little better.
Some Important Questions for My Racing Friends:
What is your routine for refueling? I really need to start thinking about this. I have tried Gu and fresh fruit so far. I’d love to know what works for you.
Falling off of the horse: Have you ever had a full week where you completely derailed your training plan? Any advice on picking back up?
I think you did good at attempting your workouts and they weren’t all a complete bust.
The main bust was the run but I envisioned myself having this amazing beach run, lol. Oh well- maybe next time!
Rock on, girlie! Good luck with training :)
Thanks, Emma
Vacation always messes up training- I didn’t swim, bike, or run once when I was in Italy for two weeks last month. I just tried to do a few 20-30 minute workout (and lots of walking) to just make sure I still had my body moving. You definitely won’t regret taking the time to enjoy yourself on vacation :) really doing any workout on vacation is a huge win, haha.
Thanks for the perspective!
